Support for jobseekers, furloughed workers, individuals facing redundancy, and employers from National Careers Service

If you are currently looking for work, the National Careers Service West Midlands can help you to assess and develop your skills, plan for your future and move into employment.

NCS can support you with:

  • access to up-to-date vacancies in demand sectors
  • matching your skills and experience to current vacancies
  • job application techniques
  • developing interview skills
  • skills assessments and identifying transferable skills,
  • identifying skills gaps and how to fill them using online learning
  • referral and signposting to current online learning opportunities available via partners and training providers.
  • signposting to additional services in support of wellbeing including mental health and financial support
  • providing information about volunteering opportunities

You can contact the service for one-to-one support by telephone, email, online workshops and webinars provided by qualified careers advisers.

This will help you to adapt to new ways of working and communicating utilising various digital platforms.

All advice will be backed up by local and regional labour market information.

You will agree an action plan with your adviser to assist with your progression into work and will receive continued support until you are able to secure employment.

Direct Support for Furloughed Workers

If you have been furloughed you can contact the NCS which can:

  • provide tailored support based on your individual needs
  • support you to identify and develop skills relevant to your future plans
  • identify and support you to access online learning opportunities in support of your career goals
  • provide advice and information on interview skills, job application techniques, skills assessments and help identify your transferable skills
  • help you to adapt to new ways of working and communicate utilising various digital platforms.
  • signpost you to other services to support your general wellbeing or financial needs.

All support will be provided by a qualified careers adviser, and you will receive an action plan identifying your next steps.

Support for employees at risk of redundancy/recently made redundant

NCS qualified careers advisers can provide one-to-one support to help you plan your next steps, help you to improve your skills or help you find alternative employment including access to new job vacancies in sectors experiencing demand for new staff.

Support for Employers

If you are an employer and you have furloughed staff, are recruiting staff to essential roles or are having to make workers redundant, NCS can provide flexible support which can be negotiated individually according to your needs.

Employers with furloughed workers

  • NCS can support employers to undertake a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) of their existing workforce and provide recommendations to enable them to upskill their furloughed staff.
  • It can help furloughed staff access a range of free online training provision including digital and numeracy skills to help improve their skillsets e.g. through The Skills Toolkit
  • It can also support employers with future recruitment, training needs and planning for the next stage.

Employers with staff at risk of redundancy

  • Experienced advisers can help employers to support their staff during this challenging period through one-to-one redundancy support, career planning, and advice and guidance for staff at risk of redundancy as well as matching employees to new jobs in sectors experiencing demand.

Employers recruiting to fill vacancies

  • NCS can support employers who are recruiting to essential areas to understand their skills needs and requirements and match individuals to specific vacancies relevant to their skills/experience.
  • It can identify suitable individuals who are available and ready to start work and match them to your vacancies.

Support for those who have been affected by exam cancellations
